At the Martin School, we believe that studying public policy is one of the most powerful ways for students to turn their passions for leadership, service and advocacy into careers that make a difference. Our public policy program prepares students for a wide range of meaningful career paths — whether in law, government, nonprofit leadership, policy research, communications or other fields. Our graduates leave with the critical thinking, analytical and communication skills needed to succeed in today’s fast-paced world. Many also continue their education in law school or other graduate programs.

Program Highlights

Engaging and Flexible Curriculum

  • Our public policy program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to deepen students’ understanding of pressing policy issues while strengthening essential workplace skills. Students also have the flexibility to pursue double majors, minors or study abroad experiences, providing a well-rounded education that aligns with their individual interests and goals.

Small Classes and Expert Faculty

  • With an average class size of just 18, students benefit from close interactions with our distinguished faculty members. Our faculty not only teach but conduct pioneering policy research and hold prestigious editorial positions in fields like policy analysis, public finance and public service leadership. Their expertise helps provide a top-tier educational experience for our students.

Hands-On Internship Opportunities

  • Our students can apply their learning through a variety of internships, from the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives to state and federal agencies like the Kentucky Legislative Research Commission and the U.S. Government Accountability Office. Internships with nonprofit organizations, consulting firms and law firms offer invaluable real-world experience that sets our graduates apart.

“Public policy is the major for people with passion! To me, a career in public policy, and potentially in law, is a path of advocacy, impactful change, and stewardship of the common good and the public interest. As a freshman, it’s hard to look a year into the future, let alone four, but with a degree in public policy, and the support of the incredible staff and students in the Martin School, I can trust that both my peers and I are being set up for success in our chosen endeavors.”
